Grandfather Sun Dream-Catchers point our attention to Grandfather Sun or Mishomis Gee'sis that represents life and time. All creatures draw their energy from Grandfather Sun which is part of the first order of being which includes the physical world of sun, moon, stars, earth, thunder, lightning, fire, rocks, soil, wind and rain. Without the physical world there could be no plant people, without the plant people there could be no animals, without animals, their little brother, the human could not live. We are the weakest of all the orders of being because we depend upon all three orders of being for our survival. Understanding this we must learn to walk in balance giving honor to all orders of being. Even the lodge opening faced the east to welcome the first rays of Father Sun into our home and our life. The east is called Waubun which means "dawn." When the first person in the home awakens, he goes out to face the sun, to reflect for a moment and then say a simple prayer to the spirit world by speaking through Grandfather Sun. Such a prayer might be something like this:
A similar prayer would be offered at sunset recounting all the good things received during the day. But it must be understood that we know that the Sun is not the Creator, but a manifestation of Creator in the Creation. When we arise from our sleep we discover a new day, a new gift of life and we walk in this path throughout the day, mindful of the wonder of this gift. These prayers are not a ritual but at the core of our life, each moment. We don't put walls on our experience but live in the midst of the blessing. All of Creation is our church and it doesn't receive a visit only on one day or for a few hours. Everyone is to share in the gifts of life, light and warmth from Creator.....through Grandfather Sun.
